Path to Black Belt How long does it take to become a black belt? The answer varies from style to style and quite honestly by the legitimacy of the instructor teaching. Most forms of marital arts take around 3 years minimum to become a black belt, and that is if you just "get it" and are very dedicated. It takes most people between 3 and 5 years to reach this benchmark, while some make take longer, and some shorter. Often people who achieve the rank in a shorter period are not being set up for success by their teacher because they are not really commiting all of the moves and techniques to muscle memory and thier instructor just wants their money. You start as a white belt and are advanced through different colored belt ranks as you learn more forms and fighting skills, eventually culminating as a Black Belt. A Black Belt is a symbol to show that a person has mastered all of the basics of a style of martial arts. Learning more advanced skills follows until 4th Degree, then it becomes more of an academic endeavor and discovering a teaching style and how to relate to others they skills you have learned.
